Safety in Jiu-Jitsu and Abuse Prevention: Our Commitment to Protecting Our Community

At Six Blades Jiu-Jitsu Fort Worth, the safety and well-being of our students are our top priority..

As part of our dedication to fostering a safe, respectful, and positive environment—particularly for our youngest athletes—we have put in place comprehensive policies to prevent abuse and misconduct. These measures reflect our unwavering commitment to providing a space where everyone can learn, grow, and train without fear or harm.

Creating a safe environment for all athletes is everyone’s responsibility; it requires collective effort and trust. That’s why we are transparent about our procedures and openly share them with our families and the broader jiu-jitsu community. By doing so, we hope to inspire other gyms to adopt similar safety practices, strengthening the community we all care about.

Our Abuse Prevention Procedures at Six Blades Jiu-Jitsu Fort Worth:

Every individual who interacts with our students—whether as an employee, volunteer, or coach—must adhere to strict guidelines. To ensure their suitability and accountability, we require all staff and volunteers to sign a document acknowledging the following:

  • Criminal History Disclosure
All staff and volunteers must answer this question as part of their onboarding process:
“Have you ever been convicted of any crime involving physical violence or sex-related offenses?”
Anyone with a history of such offenses is automatically disqualified from working with us.

  • Background Checks
All staff and volunteers must consent to a comprehensive background check, which includes: 1. A national criminal record search, 2.  A sex offender registry check, and 3. Annual re-screening to ensure ongoing safety.

  • Acknowledgment of Abuse Prevention Policies
Each staff member and volunteer must sign a document confirming they have read, understood, and agreed to follow our Abuse Prevention Policies, which include clear guidelines and specific measures such as:

    1. Monitoring: Parents or guardians are encouraged to observe all individual training sessions. Additionally, we have cameras around the gym for extra security.
    2. Observable and Interruptible: All one-on-one interactions between Adult Participants and Minor Athletes must be observable and interruptible.
    3. Transportation: An Adult Participant may not transport a Minor Athlete alone during program-related travel, unless under specific conditions, for example when a dual relationship exists, or the minor parent has given prior written consent, and there are other adults together.
    4. Out-of-Program Contact: Adult Participants who do not meet the Close-in-Age Exception or have a Dual Relationship should not engage in out-of-program contact with Minor Athletes without parental consent, even if the contact is not one-on-one.
    5. Gifting: Personal gifts from Adult Participants to Minor Athletes are prohibited, unless a Close-in-Age Exception or Dual Relationship exists. Gifts that are distributed equally to all athletes and have a motivational or educational purpose are allowed.
    6. Photography/Video: Photos or videos of athletes must be taken in public settings and must adhere to accepted standards of decency.
    7. Reporting: All known or suspected incidents of abuse must be reported immediately.

These procedures are in place to ensure that anyone interacting with our students is thoroughly vetted, helping to create a safe and protective environment for everyone in our community.

Working Together for a Safer Community

We are sharing these procedures not only to keep our own community safe but also to encourage other gyms to implement similar policies.

If you’re interested, you can access the full version of our Abuse Prevention Policy [here]. We believe that by working together and sharing knowledge, we can make the jiu-jitsu world a safer place for everyone.

If you run a gym, feel free to adopt these practices or reach out to us for suggestions on how to improve your own policies. We are stronger together, and we are committed to making the sport we love a safer place, especially for our kids.
